How to Keep Your Shower Curtain Mould and Mildew Free

Why curtains get mouldy

Shower curtains stay damp and warm — perfect conditions for mould and mildew, especially during India's humid monsoon. Trapped moisture and poor airflow are the main causes, so prevention is mostly about keeping the curtain dry.

Spread it out after every shower

The single best habit: pull the curtain fully closed (spread out) after showering so it dries evenly. Left bunched, the folds trap water and breed mildew fast.

Improve airflow

Open a window or run an exhaust fan after showering to let humidity escape. A well-ventilated bathroom dries the curtain — and everything else — much faster.

Clean it regularly

  • Plastic/PEVA/vinyl: wipe down with soapy water or a vinegar solution; many can be rinsed in the shower.
  • Polyester/fabric: machine-wash per the care label, often with a little vinegar or baking soda to fight mildew.
  • Pay attention to the bottom hem, where mould starts first.

Tackle early spots fast

At the first sign of pink or black spots, clean them immediately with a vinegar or mild bleach solution (check the material is suitable). Mould spreads quickly if ignored.

Use a liner you can replace

A separate waterproof liner takes the brunt of the moisture and is cheap to replace when it wears out — protecting your decorative curtain and keeping the setup fresh.

Dry fully before storing

If you swap curtains seasonally, make sure they're completely dry before storing to prevent musty smells and mildew in the cupboard.
