Measure your space
Before buying, measure the width of your shower or tub opening and the height from where the rod will sit down to the floor. The curtain should comfortably cover the opening with a little overlap, and hang to just above the floor.
Common size guidance
- Width: choose a curtain wider than the opening so it overlaps and contains splashes.
- Length: it should reach close to the floor (or inside the tub) — long enough to stop water escaping, short enough not to pool and trap damp.
Pick the right rod
Tension rods are easy to fit with no drilling — great for renters and standard openings. Fixed/mounted rods are sturdier for heavier curtains or wider spans. Make sure the rod length matches your opening.
Hang at the right height
Mount the rod so the curtain clears the floor by a couple of centimetres — enough to stop it dragging and getting dirty, but low enough to keep water in. Inside a tub, the curtain (or liner) should hang inside the rim.
Use the right hooks or rings
Choose hooks or rings that glide smoothly and hold the curtain securely. Rust-resistant ones last far longer in a wet bathroom. Make sure the curtain's grommets/holes match your hook style.
Add a liner if needed
If your main curtain is fabric, hang a waterproof liner on the same rod, inside the curtain, so it catches the water while the outer curtain stays decorative and dry.
Final check
Once hung, run a quick test: the curtain should close fully, overlap the edges, and keep water inside the shower zone with no gaps.
